In a pioneering study conducted by Dr. Eduardo Marban, a team of researchers used stem cells derived from patients to regenerate the damaged muscle tissue around the heart caused by heart attacks. Seventeen different patients were treated with this type of stem cell therapy and an average of fifty percent reduction in scar tissue was measured.

Dr. Marban said, “One of the holy grails in medicine has been the use of medicine to achieve regeneration.” He continued, “Patients that were treated not only experienced shrinkage of their scars, but also new growth of their heart muscle, which is very exciting.”

Unlike embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells do not result in the harm of any human beings. Instead, the stem cells come from the patient’s own body. For the study, a catheter was inserted into the patients’ diseased hearts so a small biopsy of the heart muscle could be taken.

In the lab, the extracted tissue was manipulated to produce stem cells. After a few weeks, enough stem cells had been created to allow reinjection into the patients. During the next year, the stem cells integrated with the cardiac tissue, helping with the production of new blood vessels and muscle tissue. With this type of stem cell treatment, the patients’ hearts were given the power to mend on their own.

Dr. Marban said, “We’ve achieved what we have achieved using adult stem cells – in this case – actually specifically from a patient’s own heart back into the same patient. There are no ethical issues with that – there’s no destruction of embryos. There’s no reason to worry about immune rejection.”

Similar research on the use of stem cells has been done with bone marrow. However, the research conducted in Los Angeles was the first ever to use stem cells that were retrieved from the patient’s own heart tissue.

According to Dr. Marban, this therapy can be used to treat many of the five to seven million people in this country that are suffering each year from heart disease. He says the application of stem cell treatments may even go well beyond the repair of diseased hearts. He said, “If we can do that in the heart, I don’t see any reason, conceptually, why we couldn’t do it in kidneys for example, or pancreas or other organs that have very limited regenerative capacity.”

Dr. Marban still has many more questions that he would like to have answered. For instance, although the patients in the recent study experienced new muscle growth and a considerable reduction in scar tissue, no significant improvements were indicated in actual heart function. Therefore, the stem cells may not have become cardiac muscle themselves, but instead stimulated the production of new muscle cells in the heart.

Due to the fact that this was only a “Phase 1″ experiment, the actual safety of the procedure was not measured. Serious adverse effects were experienced by six of the seventeen participants in the study. However, only one case was found to be related to the treatment they received during the study.
